Can you live at home during a renovation?

Whether you can remain home depends less on the room name and more on access, utilities, dust control, noise, and safety. The decision should be made during planning rather than after demolition begins.

Questions to answer before construction

• Will water, power, heating, or cooking facilities be unavailable?
• Can the work area be safely separated from occupied rooms?
• Is there a separate entrance for trades and materials?
• Are children, pets, allergies, remote work, or mobility concerns involved?
• Will the scope change the only kitchen or bathroom in the home?

Plan the temporary setup

If staying is practical, identify temporary food preparation, storage, washing, parking, and access arrangements. Agree on working hours and how schedule or utility changes will be communicated.

Safety comes first

Active construction areas should remain off limits. Never enter a closed work zone or move protective barriers without speaking with the contractor. For larger renovations, temporary accommodation may reduce disruption and allow work to proceed more efficiently.
